Buying Packaging Film by Thickness Alone? 3 Hidden Specs That Cost You Money
Buying Film by Thickness Alone? Big Mistake!
3 “Hidden Specs” That Cost You Money if Wrong

Cover: thickness is only the baseline — the 3 hidden specs are the key
Purchasing called the film mill: “We need 0.06mm OPP film.” When the roll arrived, the core hole was too big — it would not fit the mandrel. The whole roll had to be returned; freight and lead time were lost.
The problem: he only gave the thickness. The manual’s film-roll specs are not just one number.
1. From the Manual: the Complete Film-Roll Definition
“Outer diameter ≤300mm, core inner diameter 75mm, laminated film thickness 0.05-0.08mm. The film must be flat with no wavy edges; the 10mm edge zone must be clean with no patterns or lettering, and the registration mark must contrast clearly with the base color.”

Inside this paragraph hide 3 “hidden specs” that must go on every purchase order:

2. Hidden Spec 1: Core Inner Diameter 75mm — It Fits the Mandrel
The hole in the roll center (core inner diameter) must be 75mm. This matches the machine’s mandrel — a 76mm or 70mm hole simply will not fit.
Why is it fixed? The mandrel diameter is fixed, and the pawl tip engages the core slot to position the film. Too loose, the roll slips during unwinding; too small, it will not go on at all. Always write “core inner diameter 75mm” on the order — never just “standard core.”
⚠ Core inner diameter is a hard spec — not negotiable. Write “core inner diameter 75mm” on the order, never just “standard core.”
3. Hidden Spec 2: Outer Diameter ≤300mm — It Fits the Film Path
The roll outer diameter must not exceed 300mm. Too large, it will not fit the film path and will interfere with the guide rollers, causing poor web travel.
Also: the roll must be flat with no wavy edges. Wavy edges make the film tension pulse — bag length drifts and the registration eye misreads.
4. Hidden Spec 3: Clean 10mm Edge Zone — It Feeds the Electric Eye
“The 10mm edge zone must be clean, with no patterns or lettering; the registration mark must contrast clearly with the base color.”
The physics is in the electric eye: it locates bag length by scanning the contrast between the registration mark and the base color. Patterns or lettering in the 10mm edge zone confuse the eye — it misjudges the mark position and the bag cut drifts.
Same logic for the mark color: it must contrast clearly with the base — white base with black mark, or dark base with light mark, is safest; a dark-gray mark on a dark base is asking for trouble. See Article 11 (registration eye) and Article 16 (print-design rules).

Final Thoughts
Next time you buy film, do not stop at thickness — report 75mm core, ≤300mm outer diameter, and the clean 10mm edge zone together.
