Half-Year “Heart Check”

PCB Dust: Don't Let It Burn Your Whole PLC

Cover: open electric cabinet, PCB and PLC

Earlier articles covered visible mechanics. This one is about the PLC and boards inside the cabinet — the heart that decides whether the whole machine lives. Half a year of dust and loose terminals can burn it out.

01 Why a Heart Check Matters

img2

Fig. 1: How dust and loose terminals threaten the PLC (from manual §6.3, fault table)

Dust layers worsen cooling and overheat components; in damp weather they can cause tracking and short circuits. Loose terminals are exactly the “temperature controller blank / loose terminal” fault — bad contact and arcing that can destroy the PLC.

02 The Four Steps

img3

Fig. 2: Four half-year heart-check steps (from manual §6.3)

“Check wiring on the terminal block and tighten any loose; check components and PCBs for dust or dirt and blow them clean with clean, dry compressed air.”
— VFFS manual §6.3

• Step 1: cut the main power before any electrical work;

• Step 2: re-tighten every loose terminal on the block;

• Step 3: blow dust off the boards with clean, dry compressed air;

• Step 4: inspect spares and the V-belt/timing belt; replace if badly worn.

03 Three Hard Lines

⚠ When checking or repairing the control circuit, never work live — always cut the power (safety rule #8).

⚠ Electrical work must be done by a qualified electrician; the machine's braking program is locked and must not be altered.

✔ If the machine has been idle or is first started, run the heaters at low temperature for about 20 minutes to dry out the heating section.

Final Thoughts

You touch the mechanics every day, but the heart is only seen once every six months. A half-day of power-off, blowing and tightening buys a year of peace from PLC burnout.
